The Flag of the United States

The Flag of the United States of America reigns as the symbol of the great nation in which we live. Very definite courtesies to be shown the flag have developed, with care and reverence being foremost in the traditional respects paid to it. We offer guidelines to follow since the flag is such an important part of our National Guard traditions.

The salute to the National flag in civilian clothing is to stand at attention with the right hand over your heart. Men should remove their hats with their right hands and place them at their left shoulders with right hands on heart. Use this salute for the following:

Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag

The National Anthem
The composition consisting of the words and music known as the Star Spangled Banner is designated the National Anthem of the United States of America.

Reveille
French meaning to awaken from sleep. At the sounding of reveille, the National Flag is hoisted quickly and briskly at the first note.

To The Colors
A bugle call played during the daily ceremony of lowering the flag. At the first note of "Retreat" stand at attention, at the first note of "To The Colors" render a salute if in uniform, otherwise place your hand over your heart.

When the National Flag is passing in a parade or review a salute should be rendered six paces before the colors are before you until they are six paces past you.

There are also occasions when it is appropriate to stand at attention in respect. Personnel in uniform during indoor ceremonies generally do not salute, but stand at attention when the flag is presented by a Color Guard, the playing of the National Anthem, during the Pledge of Allegiance, and the playing of the Service Songs.
